Crypto Bridge: The Pre-Flight Checklist

Two paths, and the choice is harder than it should be. One is to keep tokens parked on their home chains and accept that moving them is friction every time. The other is to bridge them, and accept that this comes with its own costs. After spending more time than I expected looking at the current state of cross-chain work, the second path wins - but only if you check a small number of things first. That is what this post is for.

The practical case for a Crypto Bridge is straightforward: capital that lives on a single chain earns single-chain opportunities. A working bridge turns the same balance into access to lending markets on another network, a different DEX, or a yield strategy that simply does not exist on the origin chain. In a 2026 environment where the strongest opportunities are fragmented across ecosystems, the difference between idle and deployed is the bridge.

Before you move anything

Work through this list, in order. It is short on purpose.

  • Confirm the asset is the real one. Cross-chain wrapped tokens multiply. Check the contract address on the destination chain, not the ticker symbol. Two assets can share a name and have nothing to do with each other.
  • Read the fee stack in money, not percentages. Source-chain gas, bridge service fee, destination-chain gas. On Ethereum mainnet, a poorly timed bridge can eat 1-3% in gas alone on a mid-size move. Add the bridge's own cut on top.
  • Time the move to a low-fee window. Bridge at 3am UTC on a Sunday is a different cost than bridge at 2pm UTC on a Tuesday. If the move is not urgent, wait for off-peak.
  • Set the slippage explicitly. A bridge that front-runs you by 5% is a bridge you should not be using. Decide your tolerance in advance and stick to it.
  • Start with a small test transfer. A 10% test before the full amount is fifteen minutes that buys you a complete sanity check on addresses, timing, and the receiving wallet.

The risk, stated in real terms: a mistake costs you the full value of the transfer, and the time to recover it is measured in days if the destination chain's support is slow. A successful bridge is uneventful. A failed one is expensive and slow to unwind.
